SAULT STE. MARIE -- Sault Ste. Marie's bus terminal may soon find itself in transit.

The city is looking to move the current terminal, located on Queen Street and Dennis Street, five blocks west to Queen and Huron.

"We've had some concerns about the current facility for a while now," said Brent Lamming, the city's director of community services. "There have been some concerns with public safety, accessibility in respect to the washrooms and being able to support both the public and drivers with the facility at large."

Lamming says the move would cost around $2 million, with $1.5 million in funding from upper levels of government.

"We'd pay approximately just $500,000 of that for the facility and we'd save around $86,000 in ongoing operating costs at the existing location," Lamming said.

The city will host public consultations throughout the summer on what riders would like to see at a new facility.

Lamming says he's unsure if the sessions will be hosted on a public forum or virtually, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
