SUDBURY -- Someone in Sault Ste. Marie is calling residents pretending to be selling tickets for the Sault Area Hospital 50/50 draw fundraiser.

In a news release Friday, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said a man is calling residents, telling them tickets are almost sold out and they have to buy tickets over the phone.

"This is not how this fundraiser operates," police said. "This fundraiser is not selling tickets over the phone."

While concerning, police have not yet heard of anyone who has fallen victim to the scam.

"We want to advise the public to never provide personal information to anyone you do not know, including banking and social insurance information," police said. "If you have any doubt about the legitimacy of the call, email or communication, hang up or do not respond. It is not rude, it is smart."
