Sault police warn fake money circulating in the community

Sault police warn counterfeit bills could be circulating the community after a man on house arrest was allegedly found with counterfeit money.
A 28-year-old man on probation who was under orders to stay in his home between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. was arrested Thursday after officers responded to a call about a suspicious person in the Paradise Avenue area.
He was arrested around 5:40 a.m. and during a search, officers found he had approximately $1,700 in fake Canadian money with him.
The accused is charged with having counterfeit money, two counts of breach of recognizance, and breach of probation. He was held in custody pending a bail court appearance.
"With the seizure of counterfeit money, there is the possibility similar bills are circulating in the community. Police urge everyone to inspect bills thoroughly before accepting them, whether in a traditional retail setting or when completing any kind of in-person transaction," Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Friday morning.
None of the allegations has been proven or tested in court.
