SUDBURY -- Police in Sault Ste. Marie were attempting to deal with a woman driving erratically on her bike Tuesday morning when they ended up colliding with another vehicle.

The collision took place at the intersection of Pine Street and Wellington Street East. The woman they were pursuing then stole a vehicle and drove off before she got into another accident.

No injuries have been reported.

"Shortly before the collision, officers were dispatched to the area after police received multiple complaints of a woman veering in and out of traffic on a bicycle," police said in a news release. "Complainants expressed their concern for her safety as well as the safety of others on the roadway. While attempting to stop the woman on the bicycle, the officer drove into the intersection where the collision took place."

A passerby stopped at the scene to offer help to those involved in the collision, and the woman who was on the bicycle got into the person’s vehicle and fled the scene.

"She later lost control of the vehicle in the area of Pine Street and MacDonald Avenue and a single vehicle collision ensued," police said.

Officers responded and arrested 37-year-woman and charged her with theft of a motor vehicle. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 5.

The investigation into the collision involving the cruiser is ongoing.
