Sault police chief says ‘people are really getting the message’ of physical distancing

SAULT STE. MARIE -- Police in Sault Ste. Marie have so far not laid any charges for people hanging out in groups of five or more.

This month, officers in Sault Ste. Marie have responded to 34 calls for service when it comes to five or more people hanging out together. Police Chief Hugh Stevenson said no tickets have been handed out saying that “people are really getting the message.”

The chief said only warnings have been issued in the first 10 days of enforcement. “Our campaign has been all about education and enforcement.”

Last week, the chief released a video on social media warning the public that officers would be enforcing the new law. He said if a ticket is issued, it will cost $750.

The chief added that he believes the next two weeks will be crucial. With warm weather expected and people wanting to get outside to enjoy it, he said it's important that people continue to practice physical distancing and self-isolation.
