A 54-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with theft over $5,000 in a case police say involves hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The investigation began Nov. 28, 2023, after police received reports “of the accused defrauding someone known to them,” police said in a news release Thursday.

“Investigation revealed the accused, who had power of attorney over the victim’s finances, defrauded them of approximately $362,283 between March 2020 and December 2023.”

The suspect arrived at police headquarters Feb. 5 and turned themselves in.

Charges include theft over $5,000, theft by a person holding power of attorney and three counts of improper use of someone’s credit card.

Sault police are refusing to release any more details about the case because the information “could potentially identify the victim,” police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit said in an email.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on March 25.
