Sault councillor wants city to consider heated sidewalks
A city councillor in Sault Ste. Marie will be asking the city's administration to consider including heated sidewalks as part of its downtown revitalization plan.
The reconstruction of Queen Street is set to begin later this year and will include replacing sidewalks. Coun. Angela Caputo’s motion points to accessibility barriers in the downtown, which she directly ties to winter weather.
Caputo said other municipalities, including Edmonton and Holland, Mich., have successfully implemented heated sidewalks.
“The proposal that I have coming forward is to price out from Bruce to East, which is the area that we are looking at redeveloping,” she said.
“And I’m hoping to see a cost reduction from what other areas have seen because we are already tearing the area up.”
Caputo’s motion will be debated at the next Sault city council meeting, which is scheduled for Feb. 20.
