The owner of a multi-unit residence in Sault Ste. Marie was fined $47,000 this week for multiple violations of the Ontario Fire Code.

The owner pled guilty Oct. 25 to several offences, including failing to maintain working smoke alarms, failing to maintain and test fire extinguishers and failing to post emergency fire procedures.

“We take Ontario Fire Code violations very seriously as they can pose significant risks to the safety of tenants,” Naomi Thibault, the Sault’s deputy fire chief, said in a news release.

“Such penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence when it comes to complying with the Ontario Fire Code.”

“All property and business owners that having fire protection equipment inspected and tested is their responsibility, and failing to do so can result in substantial fines,” the release said.
