Police in Sault Ste. Marie say an 18-year-old suspect is now charged with assaulting two people with a metal bat on the same day.

The 18-year-old was charged with aggravated assault Monday for an attack that took place on Cathcart Street late Sunday evening.

Police said the victim was hit in the head and torso, sending them to hospital with serious injuries.

It turns out that 911 operators received another report earlier on June 23 about another attack with a metal bat, this time on Albert Street.

“The following day, an investigation revealed their identity as the accused, who was already in custody for a similar offence occurring on the evening of June 23,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“Officers attended the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and re-arrested the accused.”

The new charges are assault with a weapon and violating a probation order. The accused continues to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
