SUDBURY -- Dozens of runners took to the streets of Sudbury for the Hypothermic 1/2 Marathon.

Roughly a hundred runners had the option of running in a 5K, 10K or a half marathon.

"This is my third time doing it," said Glenn Woods, who was participating in the run.

"I just like the idea of running in the winter and this is kind of my birthday gift to myself each year since it happens right around my birthday,"

Organizers say not only do dozens of Sudburians come out, but runners from other communities here in the North.

Jim Taylor of the Running Room, who organizes the event, says the event attracts people from across the region.

"We have an incredible running community here in Sudbury and have been pretty loyal to the race and we do get quite a few out-of-towners. We’ve had probably about twenty people from three or four hours outside of the Sudbury area, coming to participate," said Taylor.

Taylor says more than half of the runners are competing in the half marathon, mainly to keep active.

"I started running seriously back in May and I just did not want to take a break through the winter so this is my first time trying through the cold. I ran a half marathon in October in much better weather and I’ve just been running continuously getting used to the cold here," said Amanda Burke, a participant running the half marathon.

Participants said they are already looking forward to next year’s event.
