Retired North Bay couple wins big by opting for the Encore
A retired couple from North Bay won $100,000 for playing a popular lottery add-on this summer and recently picked up their big cheque.
Jon and Laura Stanton, ages 66 and 64, matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in the exact order in the Aug. 27 Lottario draw to win the prize.
The Stantons said it is their favourite game and they always opt to spend the extra $1 for the extra Encore, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation said in a news release Thursday.
Jon got news of their win while using a ticket checker machine.
"I saw 'Big Winner' and just stared at the screen wondering if I just saw what I thought I did," he said at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
"I had to scan it several times to be sure – it was kind of fun."
The Stantons have been married for 42 years and Laura said she didn't believe it when he first told her.
"He kept insisting, but I kept asking him all night if he was sure," she said.
"I feel so blessed. This is very overwhelming. It’s heartwarming for us because we plan to share with our cherished family. It’s a real thrill to see how they plan to enjoy it. We will share the joy for now and take a moment before we decide what to do with the rest."
They bought the winning ticket at Mr. Gas on Highway 11 in North Bay.
