SUDBURY -- The unique landscape in Northern Ontario offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, and recently a rare meteorological phenomenon was captured on a frozen lake in the Greater Sudbury area.

Dan Delay discovered the little piles, called snow rollers, which looked like Mother Nature started making a bunch of snowmen on Vermillion Lake.

The National Geographic says snow rollers are formed when wind pushes snow across the frozen lake, requiring very specific winter weather conditions.

In order for these to form, a wind speed of 48 km/h, fresh snow that doesn't stick where it lands, and temperatures in the range of about 2.7 to 3.8 C are needed.
