Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Sudbury, North Bay

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch late Tuesday morning for areas in and around Greater Sudbury and North Bay.

That's in addition to a heavy rainfall warning already in effect for Sudbury, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watches when conditions are ripe for weather that could produce wind gusts up to 100 km/h, nickel-size hail, heavy rain and even tornadoes. The watch is in effect at least until this evening.

The heavy rainfall warning is also still in effect for all three communities.

"Periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms will bring significant rainfall today," the warning said.

"Total local rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm with locally higher amounts possible. Rainfall rates of 30 to 40 mm per hour possible."

The rain is expected to begin Tuesday morning and continue until tonight.

"Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to track along a stalled front today, which will lead to a swath of significant rain," Environment Canada said.

"The heaviest rainfall is expected this morning into early this evening. Showers and thunderstorms will continue tonight however they are expected to be lighter."

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

"Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts," the warning said.
