Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the East Algoma Region are looking for the public’s help in locating a missing five-year-old girl and her mother from the Mississauga First Nation, near Blind River.

On Jan. 15 shortly after 10:30 a.m., provincial police received a missing persons report from the First Nation community.

“Police were advised that five-year-old Nakina Boyer and mother departed their residence on (Jan. 15),” the OPP said in a news release.

“There was a scheduled appointment they failed to attend.”

UPDATE: Boyer and mother Niganobe were located on Saturday.

EXPANDING THE SEARCH

Police said the family is known to visit Batchewana First Nation and has ties to Sault Ste. Marie so officers are now expanding their search.

Nakina is described as Indigenous, 4-foot tall, 80 pounds with a heavy build, brown eyes and straight light brown hair.

Her mother, Jeanette, is described as Indigenous, 5-feet-3-inches tall, about 145 pounds with a medium build, brown eyes and long brown hair.

NO AMBER ALERT

Police officials are reminding the public that Amber Alerts can only be issued in specific situations and in cases where four specified criteria are met – police officials told CTV News this case does not meet the criteria.

POLICE SEEK POLICE ASSISTANCE

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Nakina is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact the OPP,” said Const. Gauthier.
