SUDBURY -- North Bay's Canadore College confirmed a member of its school community has reported testing positive for COVID-19.

"The person is self-isolating, and believes they were exposed to the coronavirus through travel," said Canadore in a news release Thursday evening. "There is no evidence of on-campus transmission of COVID-19, and on-campus activity continues."

While it is not known if the person is an employee or student, Canadore said the individual has not been on campus and continues to work/study remotely.

As of Thursday, there are seven active cases of COVID-19 within the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit service area, four of which are in the Nipissing District.

Five of the seven active cases are due to community spread and all are self-isolating. There are currently no COVID-related hospitalizations in the Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts.

"This week, we've experienced the highest number of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 since early April," said Dr. Jim Chirico, medical officer of health for North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, in a video message on Twitter. "Indicating we have entered our second wave."

Since the pandemic began, 56 people have contracted the disease, 48 cases have been resolved and there has been one COVID-related death in the Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts.

Chirico said while the number may seem low when compared to other health units, residents need to act now to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help prevent lockdowns.
