SUDBURY -- The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting one new death connected to COVID-19.

In a news release Thursday, the health unit said the death was related to "an institutional outbreak" and said no further information will be released out of respect for the family's wishes.

“It is with great sadness that we have another tragic loss attributed to COVID-19 in the Porcupine Health Unit region,” Dr. Lianne Catton, medical officer of health, said in the release. Out of respect for the family, no further information will be shared. “On behalf of the health unit, we extend our deepest condolences to all family and friends.”

Although some groups such as older adults and those with pre-existing medical conditions are at greater risk, anyone can develop this infection, the health unit said. While most cases are mild in nature, serious complications can occur.

“We need to continue to work together to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect our families, neighbours, co-workers and communities, Catton said.

Also Thursday, Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported seven new cases, all in Greater Sudbury. One of the cases is connected to an outbreak, another is the result of close contact with a confirmed case, while the rest are under investigation. There are currently nine people in hospital in Sudbury with COVID.

The new cases bring Public Health's total to 417 since the pandemic began.
