SUDBURY -- The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident July 29 in North Bay in which a man found unconscious in a residence was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Preliminary information from the SIU said North Bay Police and emergency medical staff were called at 12:35 p.m. to a residence in the area of Main Street and Mattawa Street in North Bay, for an adult male in medical distress.

"Police officers and EMS arrived and located a man, 35 years of age, unconscious," the SIU said. "CPR was initiated by police and continued by EMS staff."

He was then taken to the North Bay Regional hospital and was pronounced dead.

"At this time, two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this investigation," the SIU said. "One police officer has been designated as the subject officer and another a witness officer. The post-mortem took place yesterday."

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about the investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone who has video evidence related to the incident is asked to upload the video through the SIU website

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
