Police watchdog investigates after shooting death of a man in Kenora

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 57-year-old man in Kenora on Tuesday afternoon.

In a news release Wednesday, the SIU said Ontario Provincial Police located a man with knives at Anicinabe Park at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

“The man set fire to a building. Firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze,” the SIU said.

“One officer shot the man. The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday.

“One subject official and seven witness officials have been designated at this time,” the release said.

“The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.”
