SUDBURY -- The Ontario Provincial Police say two people that were subject of a search in the Wawa area have been arrested after turning themselves in.

Officers responded to a traffic complaint about a vehicle headed north on Highway 17 south of Wawa Tuesday morning around 9 a.m. The black sedan was reportedly speeding and passing unsafely and police say the occupants were suspected in a Thessalon gas theft.

Police found the vehicle on the highway near Red Rock Lake in Lake Superior Provincial Park around 11:15 a.m., but were not able to stop the car despite using spike belts.

A short while later the accused approached an off-duty OPP sergeant on Steephill Dam Road north of Wawa for gas. On-duty officers were notified and the vehicle was found stuck with the two people attempting to free it. That is when they fled from police on foot into the surrounding wooded area.

The canine unit and emergency response team were called in to assist and the search continued through the night.

At 8 a.m. Wednesday, the two accused surrendered themselves and were subsequently arrested.

They are both facing several criminal charges, but have not been detailed yet by OPP.
