SUDBURY -- Staff at the Nipissing West Ontario Provincial Police detachment received a special Christmas gift this week.

Someone made a Christmas tree ornament to honour Const. Marc Hovingh, a 28-year OPP veteran died in hospital after an exchange of gunfire Nov. 19 with a suspect, who also died.

"Nipissing West OPP would like to thank the angel who left this beautiful Christmas ornament, of our guardian angel, fallen officer, Const. Hovingh, in the entrance at Sudbury OPP Detachment," police tweeted Friday.

OPP Const. Michelle Coulombe said police don't know who made the ornament, which was discovered Thursday morning.

"When our admin clerk came in to work yesterday morning, she found the box inside our front entrance (as the door to our lobby is always locked)," Coulombe said in an email. "There was no note with it to say who it was from."

She said the gesture was a significant act of kindness for those still dealing with the tragedy.

"To see the continued support from the public is very heartwarming, not only to our police family (uniform & civilian), but to Marc’s family, as well," Coulombe said. "This kind of gesture means a lot."
