Police investigate sudden death on northwestern Ont. First Nation

The Ontario Provincial Police crime unit is investigating a death that took place June 15 in the community of Whitesand First Nation.

Police were called just after 9 p.m. and told about someone in medical distress on the First Nation.

“The individual was subsequently pronounced deceased,” the OPP said in a news release Tuesday.

“The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Stacey Shapwaykeesic of Whitesand First Nation.”

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto later this week.

The investigation is being led by the OPP North West Region crime unit, the regional support team and OPP Forensic Identification Services, under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

“Investigators do not believe there is a threat to public safety,” the OPP said.
