Police on Manitoulin Island noticed two people looking in a ditch late Thursday evening on Highway 540.

A quick investigation located a vehicle that ended up in the ditch after a collision, with two people sitting inside.

The incident began around 10 p.m. while Ontario Provincial Police were on a general patrol.

“Police observed two pedestrians standing on the shoulder of the highway looking into the ditch,” an OPP news release said Friday morning.

“Police observed a vehicle in the ditch and stopped to speak with the pedestrians. There were no injuries reported and upon speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, police were able to determine who was driving and that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages.”

The driver was arrested and taken to the detachment headquarters for further evaluation.

As a result, a 20-year-old from Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation has been charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and driving without a licence.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on July 30.
