Police confirm attempted murder case in Cobalt, Ont., was intimate partner violence

Police say that a 16-year-old was attacked with a sword Nov. 3 in Cobalt, Ont., in a case of intimate partner violence.

The victim sustained serious injuries and remains in stable condition in an Ottawa hospital, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Saturday.
The 18-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.
Police responded around 6 p.m. to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Helen Street and Prospect Avenue.
"The investigation revealed that an 18-year-old male driving a sport utility vehicle struck a 16-year-old female walking along Helen Street," police said.
"The male then exited the vehicle and attacked the victim with a sword. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, and later airlifted by Ornge to an Ottawa hospital."
"The quick response from local residents and witnesses to the incident stopped further attack on the victim," the OPP added.
In addition to attempted murder, the 18-year-old man from Haileybury is charged with aggravated assault, weapons possession and breaching a conditional sentence order.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on Nov. 12.
"The incident is being treated as an intimate partner violence case and as a result, the name of the accused will be withheld to protect the identity of the victim," police said.
