Person in wheelchair struck by vehicle on Highway 144, charges pending
Highway 144 is reopened after a person in a wheelchair was struck by a vehicle at Sturgeon Street in the Dowling area of Greater Sudbury on Tuesday night.
Officers and paramedics responded to the collision shortly before 6:30 p.m. July 30, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday morning.
The person in the wheelchair was transported to hospital with serious, life-altering injuries.
"Highway 144 was closed in both directions for just under five hours during the investigation," OPP said.
"OPP collision reconstructionist and members of the traffic collision investigation team attended the scene and will continue to assist Nipissing West OPP officers with the investigation, as it is still ongoing."
The vehicle involved was a passenger car, OPP Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Wednesday.
Lewis said charges are pending once the cause of the collision has been determined.
The person in the wheelchair was crossing the road when they were hit, he confirmed.
There have been several fatal crashes on Highway 144 this year.
