Person in a wheelchair dies after being struck by vehicle on Hwy. 144

An 53-year-old in a wheelchair has died from their injuries after being struck by a passenger vehicle July 30 in the Dowling area of Onaping Falls.

The collision took place shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Highway 144, Ontario Provincial Police said.

“A motor vehicle struck a pedestrian in a wheelchair, who was transported to the local hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

The victim succumbed to their injuries Aug. 3.

Highway 144 was closed in both directions for just under five hours during the investigation.

“OPP collision reconstructionist and members of the traffic collision investigation team attended the scene and will continue to assist Nipissing West OPP officers with the investigation, as it is still ongoing,” the release said.

The OPP said July 30 that charges are pending in the case.

Correction

The age of the victim has been corrected after police sent a corrected news release Wednesday.
