A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck on Highway 17 in the Serpent River area, between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, Tuesday night, police say.

It happened around 7 p.m. when the pedestrian was walking in a lane of traffic, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Phil Young told CTV News in an email.

An 18-kilometre stretch of the highway was closed between Highway 108 and Hamilton Street in Spanish until about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday while police investigated.

Young said no one else was injured in the crash and no charges are pending at this time.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
