Ontario provincial police have a big job right now, trying to determine the causes of two fatal motor vehicle crashes.

Two people were killed today on the outskirts of Sudbury in two different crashes.

Police say early reports indicate weather was not a factor in either crash.

Tuesday began with a transport truck crashing into a rock-cut on Highway 17, east of Regional Road 55, just after 6 am.

A female passenger was killed and the female driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The second crash also took place on Highway 17 just after 10 am, when a tractor trailer and a SUV collided east of Nepewassi Lake Road.

OPP say the preliminary investigation indicates the SUV crossed the centre line near Hagar, east of Sudbury. The female driver of the SUV was killed and the male truck driver sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Although the north east recently saw another blast of winter weather, Sergeant Carlo Berardi says the OPP believes road conditions were not a factor in either collision.

"The roads are not snow covered or anything like that. Again, we're getting that message out there to be alert when you're behind the wheel. Focus on driving, don't be distracted, those types of things. Again, this investigation is in its preliminary stages, so we don't know what the cause of the crash was. We're hoping to determine that, but again, we need people to focus on driving when they're behind the wheel." said Berardi.

The OPP sergeant says days like this are extremely difficult for first responders.

"As a matter of fact, the crew that was over in Sudbury investigating that crash, finished up with the crash when this one came in. So, they made their way over to this one. So, this is number two for them today. So, yes it is tough on emergency responders, there's no doubt about that." said Berardi.

The names of the deceased are not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
