SUDBURY -- A 43-year-old physician in Whitby has been charged after the Ministry of Health suspected she had overbilled the system by $170,000 over three years.

The ministry called in the Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Rackets Branch - Health Fraud Investigation Unit, who began an investigation that led to the charges.

The doctor is accused of overbilling the province for a three-year period ending in 2016. She is charged with two counts of knowingly obtaining payment for any insured service while not entitled, and two counts of knowingly giving false information.

The accused is expected to appear at the Provincial Offences Court in Whitby on Nov. 18.

"The OPP Health Fraud Investigation Unit investigates criminal and provincial offences involving the payment and delivery of health care services and products," police said in a news release Thursday.
