A 39-year-old suspect in a municipal fraud investigation related to missing cash deposits in North Shore Township was arrested during a traffic stop Thursday night, police say.
Just after 11:30 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers conducted a traffic stop on Hutchison Avenue in Elliot Lake, Ont. and arrested a person in the vehicle in relation to a previous fraud investigation.
“On Nov. 24, 2022, police responded to a theft of cash complaint from the North Shore Township municipal office,” police said in a news release.
The investigation determined there was an issue with the municipality’s cash not being deposited.
“Over $6,500 in cash was missing between September 2022 and November 2022,” said police.
“There was (also) a false payment and forged receipt for the same amount in an employee's property tax account.”
As a result, the 39-year-old from the North Shore community of Spragge was charged with four counts of theft under $5,000, criminal breach of trust, making a forged document and mischief to computer data.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Blind River on May 1.
