Ontario Northland provides update on train station construction

Share

Construction of the new Northlander train station begins next summer in South Porcupine.

Ontario Northland officials made a stop in Timmins on Thursday to share details and get feedback.

“We've heard from a lot of neighbours that are, you know, living right across the street or perpendicular to the station,” said Kate Bondett, senior communications manager with Ontario Northland.

“And so they're excited to hear exactly what the plans are. We have a footprint available so they can see and envision what the station might look like and what their neighborhood might look like.”

One local resident at the public information session told CTV News she was a frequent user of the Northlander before the service was discontinued and is happy it will be reinstated.

“I have two children who live in Toronto,” said Debbie Yee, a future Northlander passenger.

“It's just ridiculous trying to park and trying to navigate around the city, but with the train travel coming back and especially since it will be travelling at night, it'll be really nice to be able to get there in the morning and have the entire day without having to worry about driving back.”

More travel options

“It just provides one more means of transportation in and out of the City of Timmins, increasing accessibility, providing more options, and we hope it'll bring, you know, more affordable transportation options,” said Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau.

“Of course, myself doing a lot of travelling down to Toronto and to southern Ontario … I'm looking forward to being able to, you know, explore whatever option best suits my schedule, best suits the budget.”

Ontario Northland said the new train station will be equipped with modern amenities, including an accessible platform, WiFi, a bus terminal and a Timmins transit stop with train service expected to begin in 2026.

Ontario Northland said it will return to the city in June to provide an additional update.

Opinion I just don't get Taylor Swift

It's one thing to say you like Taylor Swift and her music, but don't blame CNN's AJ Willingham's when she says she just 'doesn't get' the global phenomenon.
