SUDBURY -- Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting one new COVID-19 case, the area's 211th since the pandemic began. There are now 22 active cases in the health unit's coverage area, with one person hospitalized as a result.

The latest case is in Greater Sudbury, and the person got the infection though close contact with a confirmed case. Neither the gender of the person nor their age was released.

In the last seven days, the health unit said 70 per cent of cases were outbreak-related and 25 per cent through close contact with confirmed cases.

Private social gatherings and links within households were common places where people were exposed to COVID-19.

Most of the cases were under the age of 40 (85 per cent) and 80 per cent were under the age of 30. The majority of the cases -- 75 per cent -- were from Greater Sudbury. The remaining cases were from either the Sudbury or Manitoulin districts.

"Through our investigation of the 20 new cases, we identified 266 people who had high-risk close contacts with these cases," Public Health said in a news release Thursday. "That is an average of 13 high-risk close contacts per case. Public Health follows up directly and regularly with every high-risk close contact to monitor them for symptoms, ensure they are self-isolating, and make recommendations for testing according to provincial guidance."

Sudbury is currently in the Yellow-Protect zone under the provincial framework, which "serves as a signal to our communities that we are going in the wrong direction and that we must recommit to public health measures," the health unit said.
