A 34-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has died following a serious crash involving an ATV on Monday afternoon, police say.

The single-vehicle collision happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Red Rock Road, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

"At this time, it appears the driver lost control of the ATV and left the roadway," OPP Const. Ashley Nickle told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

"Police investigation will hopefully determine why that happened."

The driver, who was the only rider on the ATV, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed the road between Lakeshore Drive and Wind Farm Phase 2 Road until Tuesday morning.

An investigation is continuing with the help of Sault police, the traffic incident management and enforcement team, the coroner's office and the provincial forensic pathology service.

In a span of three months last year, 10 people, including four children, were killed in ATV crashes in northern Ontario.
