A 40-year-old suspect has been charged with sexual assault following an incident Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie.

A 911 call around 6 p.m. alerted police to an incident that took place in the 300 block of Queen Street East, police said in a news release Thursday.

"An investigation revealed the accused sexually assaulted a victim, who is known to them, by touching them for a sexual purpose without their consent," police said.

"Officers located the accused at their residence and they were arrested and charged with sexual assault."

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 23.
