Off-duty officer helps free young moose stuck in northern Ont. fence
An off-duty provincial police officer came to the rescue of a young moose that got entangled in a fence in northern Ontario last Wednesday.
A young moose was freed by off-duty OPP officer after being entangled in fence in Hearst. May 1, 2024. (Ontario Provincial Police)
OPP Sgt. Dany Vienneau received a call during the lunch hour about the wild animal from a resident in the community of Hearst.
What made the operation dangerous was the moose's mother stood nearby watching closely.
Vienneau consulted with a Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officer, who was an hour away from the location, on how to set the moose free and monitor for injuries.
He was able to cut the fence to release the moose and was observed in good health as it reunited with its mother.
