There was good news this weekend regarding the forest fire situation in northeastern Ontario.

Ontario Forest Fires, which monitors wildfires in the province, reported there were no new fires as of Saturday evening and the number of active fires is down to three -- and only one is not under control.

“The fire hazard is low across the Northeast Fire Region,” the organization said in a news release.

“Areas around Chapleau and Hearst are moderate to high.”

Cochrane 8 is a 35-hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is about 57.5 kilometres northwest of Moosonee.

Cochrane 9, by far the largest ongoing forest fire, is a 6,022-hectare fire that is not under control. This fire is located about three kilometres east of Parson Lake and eight kilometres west of the Quebec border. Five crews are committed to this fire.

North Bay 5 is under control. This 106-hectare wildland fire is located about three kilometres southeast of Cobalt.
