SUDBURY -- A 28-year-old novice driver from Whitefish is facing impaired driving charges after he was pulled over by the Ontario Provincial Police on Tuesday evening.

The OPP were helping Sudbury police, who were searching for a possible impaired driver last seen in the area of Highway 17 and Eldon Avenue around 10:55 p.m.

"A short time later, officers received a traffic complaint regarding a westbound vehicle who made a U-turn on Highway 17 then continued eastbound while swerving all over the road," police said in a news release Wednesday.

OPP stopped the vehicle on Highway 17 near Fen Road and investigation revealed the driver had consumed alcohol and was arrested.

The Whitefish resident is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, being a novice driver with alcohol in their bloodstream and not wearing a seatbelt.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on Dec. 30.

The charge marks the 60th person charged with impaired driving in the Nipissing West detachment area in 2020.
