Erratic driving leads to discovery of $28K in drugs, $15K in cash, Sudbury police say

Erratic driving leads to Sudbury drug bust Sudbury police discovered $28,000 in drugs & $15,000 in cash following a traffic stop in the city’s Flour Mill community on Monday.

Bad driving in the Flour Mill area of Greater Sudbury led police to find a cache of drugs believed to be 280 grams of cocaine, as well as magic mushrooms.

In addition to the drugs, worth an estimated $28,000, police also found $15,000 in cash, multiple knives and drug packing materials.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. Dec. 23, when police saw a vehicle being driven "in an erratic manner."

"The officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Notre Dame Avenue and King Street to address the Highway Traffic Act violations of the driver," police said in a news release Friday.

"While speaking with the driver, it was determined that the driver was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. The officer also located an open bottle of alcohol within the driver’s reach. The driver was asked to exit the vehicle and was placed under arrest by officers."

A search of the suspect led to the discovery of the cash and cocaine. A search of the vehicle led police to find more cash, the magic mushrooms and other items.

The 54-year-old driver has been charged with several offences, including trafficking, weapons possession, careless driving, driving while suspended, violating release orders (two counts), and having open liquor in the vehicle.

He was held in custody overnight and appeared in bail court on Dec. 24.

The 49-year-old passenger was charged with trafficking and was released with a court date of Jan. 22.
