TIMMINS -- The Northern Ontario Tourism Summit is back in Timmins this year and industry professionals are excited with optimism over the possibilities for further tourism development in the region.

Groups, such as Destination Northern Ontario, highlighted the potential to attract more international visitors.

David MacLachlan is the executive director of Destination Northern Ontario. He says the region currently gets a small percentage of its tourism revenue from international guests, but says the industry is at the cusp of breaking that barrier.

"Our target market is primarily the U.K., Germany, Japan, and Korea," said MacLachlan, adding that over 100 companies are now selling the northern Ontario experience abroad.

"It’s going to be a long-term [plan], but everyone is interested," said MacLachlan.

Officials suggest increased social media engagement could be the key to attracting a larger and more diverse tourism population.

More details to come as the event unfolds.
