Northern Ont. police say Alberta suspect had open liquor in vehicle, $16K in drugs

A spot check in Kirkland Lake earlier this week not only uncovered impaired driving, but a cache of illegal drugs.

Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police were conducting roadside checks Oct. 2 on Highway 11 in Eby Township when they saw a driver with an open bottle of booze.

“Police located and seized suspected methamphetamine speed tablets and cocaine with an approximate street value of $15,900,” the OPP said in a news release Wednesday.

“Also seized was an amount of Canadian currency and unmarked cigarettes.”

A 44-year-old from Spruce Grove, Alta., has been arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine and meth, possession of property obtained by crime, driving with booze and cannabis available to the driver, having unmarked cigarettes and driving an unsafe vehicle.

The accused has been released following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake Nov. 9.
