Northern Ont. police catch liquor store thief, getaway driver

Two people from southern Ontario have been charged in connection with a liquor store robbery Wednesday in the Town of Thessalon.
The suspects were caught after trying to flee on Highway 17 and hiding the booze in a snowbank.
Police responded around 2:45 p.m. to the Main Street robbery.
"The investigation revealed that the suspect entered the liquor store, took several bottles of liquor without attempting to pay, and walked out," the OPP said in a news release Thursday.
"The individual then fled northbound on Main Street in a getaway car. While patrolling, police spotted the suspect white car travelling westbound on Highway 17 near Jarrett Road."
Police pursued the vehicle, at which point the driver sped away, heading west and passing other vehicles.
"The white car then turned off Highway 17 onto Waltonen Road which leads to a dead-end," police said.
"Officers located the white car parked on the road with two individuals inside. Both suspects were arrested at the scene."
An attempt to hide the liquor bottles in a nearby snowbank failed as officers quickly found them.

A 23-year-old from Brampton and a 30-year-old from Niagara Falls have been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. The 30-year-old was also charged with dangerous driving.
The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Thursday. The pair's next court date is in Elliot Lake on Feb. 6.
