Northern Ont. bank employee taken to hospital with serious injuries after shooting

An employee at Northern Credit Union in Wawa, Ont., was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a shooter entered the branch and opened fire Thursday morning, the financial institution said in a statement.

It happened around 11 a.m., the news release said.

Ontario Provincial Police warned of its increased presence in the area of Mission Road and Magpie Road on social media just after noon.

Police said there is no threat to public safety or local schools.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by today’s shooting. Our thoughts are with the individual who was injured and we are providing support to them and their family," said Richard Adam, president and CEO of Northern Credit Union, is quoted as saying in the news release.

"The safety and wellbeing of our employees is our top priority and they will have our full assistance."

The Wawa branch on Mission Street will remain closed until further notice.

Suspect found dead

A second individual, believed to be the suspect, was located deceased," OPP said in an update just after 10 p.m.

No details about the suspect have been released and there is no word on the whether or not the shooter and victim knew each other.

"The Superior East OPP is conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch with assistance by the Superior East OPP Crime Unit, the OPP forensic identification services, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service," police said.
