SUDBURY -- Northern College in Timmins announced Thursday temporary layoffs of 42 part-time workers.

None of the layoffs are teachers, the college said in a news release.

In a statement, CEO Fred Gibbons said the decision was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Due to the changing nature of work here at Northern College due to COVID-19, this week, we will be moving ahead with temporarily laying off a number of part-time workers until, in most cases, the end of August of this year," Gibbons said.

"This is being done due to the decline of work in some areas, including on-campus activities, as a result of the global pandemic."

The college later confirmed the layoff will affect 42 people in part-time, non-teaching roles.
