North Bay police were called to a local elementary school Sunday evening after a boy was attacked by a 14-year-old during a pick-up basketball game.

The victim sustained significant injuries and the teen suspect has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

"During the game, the accused charged at the victim, punching him in the face several times," North Bay police said in a news release.

"The attacker then threw the victim to the ground and kicked him in the face and ribs."

When the other players stepped in to help the victim, the accused fled the area on foot.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and treated for his injuries.

Officers arrested the suspect that same evening and he was taken to police headquarters where he was held for a bail hearing.

"In accordance with Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, the North Bay Police Service will not be releasing the name or any other information that may lead to the identification of the accused," police said.

The allegation has not been proven in court.
