SUDBURY -- Charges have been laid in a fatal crash that killed a Nipissing University student who was hit by a car while riding a bicycle in North Bay last fall.

Eight months after the tragic incident that claimed the life of 24-year-old Shelby Dickey, from Grey County, a 17-year-old from North Bay has been charged with careless driving causing death and dangerous operation causing death.

Police say they were called to investigate a crash between a passenger car and a bicycle on Highway 63 at 9:10 a.m. Sept. 1, 2019.

Dickey, a student-athlete, was taken to hospital after the crash and later died of her injuries.

She was reportedly four days away from defending her Master’s thesis on Environmental Stress in Relation to Athlete Performance and earning her Masters Degree of Human Physiology at Nipissing.

The accused scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay at a later date.
