SUDBURY -- Saturday morning, North Bay police responded to a complaint about a drone flying in the West Ferris area of the city.

Around noon, an officer responded to a complaint of a drone interfering with air traffic, police said in a news release Monday.

"It was reported to be flying in the area of the West Ferris Arena," the release said. "The officer was not able to locate the drone or the person responsible."

Drones cannot fly 5.6 kilometres from airports without obtaining permission, police said. And you need a drone pilot license to fly one that weighs more than 250 grams.

"You need to be 14 years old to get a basic license, 16 years old to get an advanced license and children younger than 14 must be supervised by someone with a license," police said.

Fines for individuals not following the rules can be as high as $1,000 per violation.

North Bay Police also provided a link to Transport Canada’s website, "which is an excellent resource answering many of the questions you may have regarding safe operation of a drone."
