More charges have been laid against the 21-year-old North Bay man charged with attempted murder in a shooting last week in the Birch Haven area after police searched a local home.

A 19-year-old was shot in the abdomen with a handgun in the parking lot of Holy Cross Catholic Elementary around 2 a.m. June 5 after an argument escalated among a group of people getting drunk.

The accused was found armed with a knife a short distance from the school by responding officers and the gun was located nearby, North Bay Police Service said in a news release last week.

"The parties involved in the incident are known to each other, and have no affiliation to the school," police said.

As part of the investigation, police obtained a search warrant for a home and found a loaded semi-automatic 22 calibre rifle, various ammunition and 57 MDMA pills.

In addition to the 13 initial criminal charges, the suspect is now also charged with drug possession and five different firearms-related offences, including tampering with the serial number of a gun, unauthorized possession and careless storage.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court June 12.

No word on the status of the victim.
