SUDBURY -- Police say a North Bay man has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault on a woman and attempted abduction of her child.

After a 9-1-1 call about an incident on Fisher Street in North Bay Tuesday evening, police say a 42-year-old local man is in custody.

Authorities say it allegedly began shortly before 7:30 p.m. when the victims were approached by an unknown man on Main Street East. After a brief interaction, the mother and child walked onto Fisher St., where the accused tried to grab the child.

The man is accused of punching the female victim several times before another citizen stepped in to stop the confrontation. He then reportedly fled the scene.

Police say the victims did not require any medical attention.

The accused was identified and arrested later that evening.

He is being held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday.
