In North Bay a military veteran is preparing for a competition on the world stage.

Dave Innes will be competing in the 2018 Invictus Games coming up in October in Sydney, Australia.

He says the accident that changed his life 28 years ago has never slowed him down.

At 18 years of age Innes joined the military, but a major accident left him paralyzed.

He says it was a struggle at first to learn how to do things again, but in the end, it gave him a new outlook on life and a new drive to achieve his goals.

Now, he's busy training six days a week for October’s competition in Sydney.

He says his interest actually began when Toronto hosted the Invictus Games last September.

"I was asked last minute by the base here in North Bay and veteran’s affairs had recommended me, you know, to represent and be the flag bearer. And then, I just got talking to some people who were involved in the games and they said you should fill out an application for next year." said Innes.

In Australia in October, Innes will be competing in power lifting, wheel chair basketball and indoor rowing.
