New release by Sudbury rapper

Sudbury Rapper Mickey O’Brien has a new release called Postcards.

O’Brien, who also works underground as a miner in Sudbury, wrote the album when he was on tour across the world.

“It’s about discovering some new things about myself during my travels, as well as letting go of some old pieces of myself,” he said.

The video for his new song, Gina, was shot in New York Times Square.

O’Brien said he has struggled with addiction and music has been a positive outlet for him.

“I had a drug and alcohol problem for a large part of my life," he said.

"I am now over four years clean and sober. And music has been my outlet to help me recover from all that and then share my story with the world."

O’Brien said he hopes his music inspires others.

“Hopefully someone going through something that I was going through at that time, you know, they can relate and hopefully it helps them through that situation," he said.

"The world is a cold place ... If I can make someone dance or smile or laugh or cry or move them in any certain way, I feel like my job is done."

The EP comes with six postcards, one featuring the train station in Sudbury.

“I called the record Postcards because it was almost like writing letters to myself or little memos to myself about the changes that have taken place in the last year -- things that I have been dealing with, some things that I need to let go of,” said O’Brien.

The official release of Postcards is Friday night at the Townhouse Tavern in Sudbury.

O’Brien will then be performing in Sault Ste Marie on Saturday at the Vivid Art Festival.
