NDP MPPs calling for one-time rebate for northerners

Share

New Democrat MPPs in northern Ontario are calling on the Ford government to give residents in the region a monetary rebate to offset the cost of living in this region.

They say rising gas prices and hydro costs are leaving households in the north at a disadvantage and the province's temporary gas tax reduction offers little help.

The provincial NDP wants a one-time rebate of $200.

"If the government votes against it, it's a good indication that they are not serious, actually serious, in helping northerners with the cost of living," said John Vanthof, the NDP MPP for Timiskaming-Cochrane.

"We hope that the government will see the benefits of it and vote in favour and help northerners. If they vote against, we are going to continue to work for northerners, continue to push for the regulation of gas prices."

The NDP it will force a vote on the issue at Queen's Park this week.
